Old Taste vs Old Town, and some rubbish
By Tiuniasing | April 10, 2008
I am now at Kluang, writing this post in a kopitiam called Old Taste Ipoh White Coffee. My final destinaiton is JB but I have to drop by Kluang to meet someone. I am not gonna reveal whom I met just now because my wife is reading my blog. Who knows, the one I met could be one of my ex-girlfriends??
I left home as early as 6:30 this morning. I hugged my sleeping beauty and threw three old words “I love you” before I departed. Everytime I am travelling alone, I am so used to drive early in the morning because I want to get rid of speed trap. In my experience, I have never seen a roadblock or speed trap camera between 6am - 8am. So I am so fucking sure that I am gerenti safe to speed on the highway at this hours.
As usual I was on 180 km/h on most part of PLUS from Sg. Besi Toll until I came to Ayeh Keroh flyover R&R. I stopped by for a rest and continued my journey. I drove at 110 km/h after that because the sky was kinda bright after 7.15 am today. I think it is kinda risky to speed visibly since I have totally lost my naturally stealth capability (dark sky), so I had no choice but to follow the speed limit.
Supposingly I was already in my way to JB now. But due to the urgency of my ass just now, I have to find a good place for a good shitting business. I thought of going to the highway rest-station or R&R, but the emergency seemed to come before I could make it to the nearest rest-station. Therefore I couldn’t help but to change my plan to somewhere in Kluang town. I tend to believe that the public toilets in the latest shopping mall are anytime more hygienically than any of the toilets at petrol kiosks or any restaurant that you can find in Kluang. Finally I had it settled in Kluang Parade, everything done expectedly smooth and comfortable.
As I wanted to leave for JB after my ass business, the sky looked kinda dark. I decided to have lunch here before I continued my journey. I’m now in Old Taste cafe which is located the the entrance of Kluang Parade. When I first read the name of this kopitiam, I was damn mad with it’s copycat branding. For your information, my wife and I are Old Town White Coffee regular customer though I only love their Iced-Xi Mut Milk Tea.
At Old Taste here, the deco is 90% similar to Old Town, so are the menu and staff uniform. I ordered a baked toast, one set of steamed bread, the Omega eggs and a hot white coffee. Seriously I am not a fan of white coffee, I ordered just to taste the difference only. To my surprise Old Taste white coffee is as good as the Old Town’s one. About the baked toast, I think I must have been bored with the original Old Town baked toast, so I give credit to Old Taste baked toast this time. Surprisingly the steamed bread came out as the one I love the most in Old Taste. They have enough butter in it, mixed with the rarely found savory kaya that made the whole thing looked so original and kampung that I immediately recalled all the moments when I was a kid in my hometown Ipoh.
I think they don’t have WIFI service because I don’t see anyone doing online here, and no WIFI signage on the wall too. I don’t like the idea of copying everything from Old Town White Coffee because they can’t be an Old Town no matter how well they can copy, it just make them as if the follower of Old Town, they don’t have their own style which is really disappointing. I strongly believe that the boss of Old Taste used to work with Old Town.

“Surprisingly the steamed bread came out as the one I love the most in Old Taste.”
Typed wrongly la.I think u meant old TOWN not taste.

not Old Town, but Old Taste. Old Town has no steamed bread.
excuse..all old taste provide WIFI services la…
excuse..all old taste provide WIFI services la…
ya lo ya lo….have wifi ler….actually i more prefer Old Taste..more foods and drinks ler…
both concept are similar la.but drinks i think Old Taste better ler.More “GAO”…
boom,
I had no idea, but I knew it now.
Shooter,
sometimes food isn’t the primary criterias, environment do count. I do not visit all OldTowns, I only go to the selected outlets as I enjoy spending my time there because of the atmosphere, environment, musics, staff, etc there. The one I hang around the most now is South City Plaza OldTown outlet. I am here now.
FuyOh,
oh issit?? One of my business partner suggests me to go Old Taste too. Maybe I should reconsider Old Taste.
tiuniasing,
i agreed with FuyOh, i tried the coffee there, really more GAO..
Shooter,
for me, gao is not everything. In fact, gao doesn’t mean tasty for me. When I spend in a kopitiam, the atmosphere environment of the kopitiam is the priority but not the food or beverage because I am going to stay a few hours there. Without a comfortable environment, hardly for me to stay long there.
Actually, what’s so great about Old Town anyway.
Sorry to say this, but I think their service s**ks.
Each and everytime I go there there is bound to be one items not served to my table. And they even have the cheek to charge on my bill.
Also…. I’m the person who must have toasts together with soft-boiled eggs. And they dare to only serve one of the two items.
And ….. as a consolation, Old Town has found a worthy direct competitor in terms of service and if I must say, products, in Old Taste.
So, for you guys out there, please to not treat Old Town as an equivalent to McD. They are not up to par yet. Not even worthy of a fan club, I would say.
Yu,
I think service is by branch respectively, not all have lousy service.
The reason I visit to the South City OldTown is because of the environment. Never have I see a restaurant with the smoking area equipped with air-conditioning. Cool or not?? Hahaa…
1)Old Taste at Kluang Parade got a WIFI service.(i never comment anything that i dun understand)
2)I’m a kluang ppl, if u want to ask for my opinion, i will tell u that the f&b in old town here cannot compare with the old taste in kluang mall.( is Kluang Mall not Kluang Parade)
